Saint Gaudens' Double Gold Eagles are regarded as one of the most beautiful and extraordinary coins of all time. There features are the following: gross weight is 33.346 grams, net weight is .96750 ounces of pure gold, .900 gold composition and .100 copper, a 34 mm diameter and reeded edge.
The Saint Gaudens' Double Gold Eagles were produced in 1907 when Theodore Roosevelt commisioned friend and famous sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens to redesign the beloved coin. Theodore Roosevelt requested that the coin have a likeness of the coins from Greece. At the time of the design Saint Gauden was very ill, yet agreed to the task and offered Roosevelt a few different designs. Roosevelt chose the "High Relief" design which featured Miss Liberty striving gloriously into the future and a Flying Eagle on the opposite side.
The design was considered "High Relief" because of the meticulous process of blows to the dies that it takes to produce a coin with extreme detail. Twenty-four "proofs" were produced during March and April of 1907. Sadly, Saint Gaudens died on August 3, 1907, and did not live to see his magnificant coins go into full circulation.
In November 1907, over 11,000 High Relief coins were produced. However, despite their beauty, the process to produce them was impractical as well as bankers complained that they toppled over when you tried to stack more than twenty. Functionality won, and the coins were redesigned by Charles Barber into a low relief or flat relief version. As the low relief versions were produced, the original high relief Saint Gaudens coins became extremely valuable as a collector's item.
From 1907-1908, the Saint Gaudens Double Gold Eagles were produced without the motto "In God We Trust". Although in 1866 Congress passed a law that coins should have this motto, Roosevelt thought it was sacrilegious to have "God" on coins that people might drop, gamble with or use for other immoral occassions. However in 1908 Congress over ruled Roosevelt and the coins began to be produced with the "In God We Trust" motto.
In 1933, during the Depression, Roosevelt banned personal ownership of gold. All gold coins were recalled and their production ended. There were some coins that were minted in 1933, but never released into circulation. It is said that a small handful of 1933 Saint Gaudens Double Gold Eagles were removed from the highly guarded mint bags and replaced by earlier releases. For this reason 1933 minted Saint Gaudens Double Gold Eagles are extremely valuable and worth a fortune! However, it still is a federal offense to have this coin subject to confiscation and prosecution.
