The Liberty Head Double Gold Eagles were first minted in 1849 and designed by the great James B. Longacre. There features are the following: gross weight is 33.346 grams, net weight is .96750 ounces of pure gold, .900 gold composition and .100 copper, a 34 mm diameter and reeded edge.
There are only a couple of known Libery Head Double Gold Eagles to have been stampted with the date of 1849. One of these rare coins currently resides at Smithsonian Institution.
The Liberty Head Double Gold Eagles were mass produced from 1850-1907. During this time period three types of the Liberty Head design were released.
From 1849-1866, these coins have been dubbed "no motto" because the motto, "In God We Trust" was not featured on the coins as later models had.
From 1866-1876, the motto, "In God We Trust" was added to the coins for the first time, and they quickly became referred to as "with motto".
The third and last modified Liberty Head Double Gold Eagles were produced from 1877-1907. These had more detail to the face and hair of Miss Liberty and the writing of the value on the coin was changed from "Twenty D" to "Twenty Dollars". These modified coins continued to have the motto, "In God We Trust".
The last of the Liberty Head Double Gold Eagles were produced in 1907 when Theodore Roosevelt commisioned famous sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens to redesign the beloved coin. Saint Gaudens' Double Gold Eagles are regarded as one of the most beautiful and extraordinary coins of all time.
