The Double Gold Eagles are an United States gold coin with a denomination of $20. They were first minted in 1849 which coincided with the United States Gold Rush. Each coin was produced to contain .96750 ounces of gold content which cooresponded to the $20.67 price per ounce of gold at that time.
Prior to the Double Gold Eagles production, the United States had been using the $10 Eagle gold coin that was minted in 1795. When the new $20 coins were produced, they were quickly named "Double Eagles" because they were twice as big and popular as the $10 coin. The Double Gold Eagles were produced from 1850 until 1933 with two variations, The Liberty Head and Saint Gaudens.
